Asuransi Astra is one of Indonesia’s established insurance providers, with a history dating back to 1956. Today, the organisation is supported by a team of around 1,700 employees, and continues to focus on delivering reliable services while developing its people.

Central to this growth is the Human Capital Division, particularly the Learning Management Department. They play a crucial role in fulfilling the company’s mission to nurture talent. They focus on developing both technical and soft skills in employees, which are essential for enhancing overall performance and enabling individuals to succeed in their roles.

But as the workforce became more mobile and diverse, the challenge grew: How do you ensure seamless learning for everyone — whether they’re working from an office or on the go?

Adapting learning to a changing workforce

Asuransi Astra had long used Moodle to support its New Employee Orientation Program (NEOP), helping new hires understand the company’s values, policies and processes. Over time, however, it became clear that the platform needed to evolve to support a broader and more dynamic set of learning needs.

As the organisation grew, so did the volume and complexity of information employees needed to navigate — from updated policies to role-specific procedures. The challenge wasn’t just making this information available, but ensuring employees could understand it and apply it in their day-to-day work.

At the same time, the platform offered limited visibility into how learning was being used. Without clear insights into participation, engagement or knowledge retention, it became harder for leaders to understand what was working and where improvements were needed.

Accessibility also became a key concern. With more employees working remotely or on the move, a web-only experience with a fixed interface no longer met expectations. Teams needed a more flexible solution — one that could be accessed easily across devices, without sacrificing usability or engagement.

To keep pace with the business and better support its people, Asuransi Astra recognised the need for a more adaptable platform — one that could deliver knowledge effectively while providing meaningful insight into learning outcomes.

Choosing a platform built for flexibility and growth

To address these growing challenges, Asuransi Astra set out to find a solution that could support both its immediate needs and long-term learning goals. Following a detailed evaluation led by the Learning Management Department, EVP Human Capital & Facilities Management, and the Human Capital Director, the team chose to continue building on Moodle.

A key factor in that decision was accessibility. With a responsive design and a dedicated mobile app, the platform allows employees to access learning anytime, anywhere — whether they’re in the office or on the move. This flexibility made it easier to engage a more mobile workforce and increase overall platform usage.

To make the most of the platform, Asuransi Astra partnered with PCMan Indonesia, a Moodle Certified Partner. Their expertise helped the team tailor the platform to their specific needs, while also providing guidance on how to optimise learning outcomes.

The decision to continue with Moodle was shaped by several factors. Its proven reliability, strong customisation options through plugins, and widespread use across both corporate and education sectors gave the team confidence that it could support their evolving requirements.

With this foundation in place, Asuransi Astra introduced a range of enhancements designed to improve user experience and drive greater engagement.

Turning learning into a strategic advantage

The shift to a more capable learning platform has transformed how Asuransi Astra approaches learning. By improving accessibility, usability and visibility into outcomes, the organisation has created a more engaging and effective learning experience for its employees.

Engagement has increased significantly, with platform usage rising by 340% compared to the previous year. Employees are not only participating more actively, but also requesting to use the platform as a space to share knowledge and track understanding — a clear sign that learning is becoming part of everyday work.

The impact is also visible from a business perspective. Using ROI (Return on Investment) and NQI (Net Quality Income) as benchmarks, Asuransi Astra has shown that its learning platform delivers measurable value — supporting productivity while helping manage costs more effectively.

Looking ahead, the team is exploring how emerging technologies such as AI can further enhance the experience. With a strong foundation in place, they’re focused on making learning more personalised, adaptive and aligned with the needs of their workforce.

Together, these improvements have positioned Asuransi Astra to support its people today while preparing for the future of learning.
