Managing Media in your Moodle

Moodle is a learning platform designed to provide educators, administrators and learners with a single robust, secure and integrated system to create personalised learning environments. While Moodle is much more than a simple content management, the management of media content from import and within the platform are important factors.

Here we explore some methods, plugins and information to assist media content in your Moodle.

Embed Media
Embed audio and video files using the Media function in the HTML or text editor of various resources and activities.

Repositories
Content from virtually any stable external repository can be imported into Moodle. Import from Youtube, DropBox and others. There are a number of plugins to extend repositories here.

Poodll
A repository plugin, this allows you to record audio or video directly into your Moodle HTML areas. It also allows students to draw pictures or take webcam “snaps.” This is one of the frequently downloaded plugins for Moodle.

External media players
Site administrators enable the multimedia plugins filter. Moodle prepares the media files to be played in the browser, withplayback is handled by browser software, such as Adobe Flash, Quicktime, Windows Media Player and Real Player.

mPlayer
The Media Player plugin activity module for Moodle is a UI tool to deploy the JW FLV Player 5.0 in Moodle

Galleries
A plugin which allows instructors/teachers to create a space for students to submit “galleries”. These galleries can be based on images, audio or video.

Hyperlinks can also be created in a text editor, with other options for managing media. There is also helpful discussions in the Moodle forums.
