Moodle for the Workplace – How, What, Why?

July 12, 2017

Being a learning platform, of course we can easily understand and see how Moodle can be used for the classrooms, schools, universities and other higher education institutions.

But if you read through some of our case studies on Moodle Stories you will also find a number of organisations – from big corporations such as Mazda in Colombia, financial institutions such as rediATM and not-for-profit organisations, like World Vision – are also using Moodle for a variety of reasons.

Whether it is to induct staff, for training and certification or for professional development/learning opportunities, Moodle is being used in many workplaces around the world as a learning and work-related solution.

Moodle Partner eThink Education recently took the time to share with a large audience in the US and Caribbean within the edtech, government, and enterprise industries how Moodle can effectively be used for the workplace.

Brian Carlson, Co-founder and CEO, and Randy Jones, VP of Sales, shared the how, what, and why of Moodle for Workplace. Below we have summarised their webinar presentation which you can also watch online.

Why Moodle for your workplace?

Most Widely Used LMS in the World

Randy started off the webinar with a comment that many younger employees may have used Moodle during their K-12 and higher education years, seeing as Moodle is the world’s open-source learning platform. Hence, using a tool in the workplace that employees have literally grown up with and are extremely familiar with makes sense!

Inexpensive

Moodle is also free to download, making it a cost-effective solution for organisations which have limited budgets. With existing expert support from over 80 Certified Moodle Partners worldwide, organisations can also look for a more customized look and performance out of their Moodle sites.

Flexibility & Integrations

Lastly, Randy explained that one of the reasons to choose Moodle for the workplace is because “nearly every other technology in the market wants to integrate with Moodle.” As an open-source platform, Moodle easily integrates with and compliments your current workplace solutions.

This aspect lends to the “flexible” nature of Moodle… An organisation can customize their site to suit their branding needs and guidelines and integrate the tools and plugins necessary to meet their needs. Check out two examples of branded sites below.

What makes Moodle right for the workplace?

Brian Carlson continued to explain some main features and focus of Moodle that makes it an excellent choice for the workplace.

One of them is our concentration on improving the User Interface (UI) for both the web and mobile application, making Moodle sites on all devices easier to use and navigate.

Brian commented that Moodle Mobile in particular is doing “things that no other native apps in the market are doing for learning.”

With more learning happening via mobile devices, Moodle’s focus on the mobile app supports employees in the workplace to learn wherever, whenever at the touch of a button.

Brian explained how the new functionalities in Moodle – such as competencies, learning paths, and user tours – allow for a more collaborative learning approach.

Again, “flexibility” is one of the key benefits of Moodle… Brian explained that the flexible nature of Moodle allows you to create a customized course or even gamify your content to make any learning more “fun” and engaging.

Another important consideration by organisations when choosing a learning platform is whether it integrates well with their existing systems. As Randy alluded to above and is reiterated by Brian, Moodle integrates with many systems – including, but not limited to, popular ones such as Salesforce, Success Factors, Lynda.com and many e-commerce platforms.

Also, choosing Moodle means that organisations do not need to rely on just one system for their eLearning needs but can build a learning ecosystem of platforms and tools that enhance and integrate seamlessly with Moodle.

Lastly, Brian explained that Moodle offers built-in reporting and easily integrates with robust analytics and reporting platforms like IntelliBoard – a partner of eThink Education which supports analytics (as seen in the screenshot below) – as a necessary consideration for organisations looking to make data-driven decisions. Analytics allow you to track compliance, course completions, and competencies which is valuable when considering employees for promotions or succession planning in general.

Moodle’s Project Inspire – the open source solution to learning analytics – is currently in the pipeline. Of course, due to the integration ability of Moodle, other third-party options are available to quickly and accurately provide all the data that an organisation may need.
