PERTH, Western Australia – MoodleMoot Australia 2016 started today with a series of pre-Moot workshops and dev jams at the Novotel Langley Hotel, Perth.
Over the full day, participants attended workshops which included:
- Introduction to Moodle
- Mobile Learning with Moodle Masterclasses
- Learning Analytics & Moodle
- Online Course Design
- Moodle Assessment
Moodle HQ Community educator, Mary Cooch, delivered the ‘Introduction to Moodle’ sessions, with Chad Outten from My Learning Space. They provided the audience with information on ‘What is Moodle?’ and ‘How to use Moodle?’ whilst also running a hands on demonstration on Moodle’s features, such as how to add pictures to Moodle courses and videos.
Mary and Chad also ran afternoon sessions on Online Course Design, which focussed on information for designing courses made for the online learning environment. The workshop was broken up into sections that featured content, assessment and communication. This was followed with detailed discussions on the best methods for presenting learning materials, writing effective quiz questions and making sure that your course functions well on mobile.
Moodle HQ Analyst Elizabeth Dalton talked about everything Learning Analytics & Moodle, to capture the essence of learning activity. Elizabeth outlined her talk through this short video.
The Mobile Learning with Moodle workshop, presented by Moodle HQ mobile developer, Pau Ferrer, gave everyone an in-depth tutorial on the functionality of the Moodle Mobile app. Pau shared knowledge on getting the most out of mobile learning with the Moodle Mobile app, including tips on areas such as assessment, out of class activities, and image and assignment uploads.
Mark Bailey, from MoodleRooms (who are also MoodleMoot Australia 2016 sponsors), conducted a “Moodle Assessment Masterclass.” The session focussed on audience participation and Mark discussed the choice of assessment methodologies available with Moodle which caters to a number of teachers and students’ needs. The masterclass focused on peer review, quizzes, glossaries and formative options.
Four dev jam sessions throughout day 1 also saw our Moodle HQ developers talking and demonstrating about new and upcoming features and APIs. Some of the topics covered include:
- Mustache templates, AMD modules and web services
- Group and Groupings – why you should support them
- The new theme
- Accessibility – how and why
- The new developers’ tutorial
- The H5P Moodle plugin
- The new charts API
- In-place editable
- Installing Solr for Global Search
