Empowering Filipino educators at MoodleMoot Philippines

June 13, 2019 By Júlia Verdaguer

On May 8 – 10, Nephila Web Technology, our Certified Moodle Partner in the Philippines, hosted Moodlemoot Philippines 2019 (MootPH19) at the University of the Philippines: an event for educators, for Moodle users and for everyone who identifies with Moodle’s mission.

MootPH19 empowered Filipino educators in a very practical way with a new workshop day where everyone had the chance to set up their own Moodle site and experience it for themselves. For long-time Moodlers, this was a chance to gain new perspectives and exchange best practices as they collaborated with new Moodle users during the activities.

Delegates also had the opportunity to hear two inspiring keynotes: On Day 1, Moodle’s CEO and Founder Martin Dougiamas, where he highlighted the values that Moodle is built on: education, respect, integrity, openness and innovation. He also updated delegates with Moodle’s roadmap for Moodle 3.8 and beyond and invited them to the MoodleMoot Global 2019 conference, organised by Moodle HQ, and the Open EdTech conference, sponsored by Moodle.

On Day 2, Dr Melinda Bandalaria, Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) and president of the Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) opened the day’s sessions with a keynote on ODeL as Framework for Lifelong Learning and Sustainable Development.

Presentation of success stories and good practices with Moodle organised in various streams made up the rest of the conference. The stream “People and Organisation” focused on the use of the Moodle LMS and edtech for professional training, learning and development; while the “Research Festival” covered educational uses of Moodle and technology. Along with the Instructional Design presentations, there were also technical sessions on development and discussions on Pedagogy.

MoodleMoot Philippines also provided delegates with many opportunities for networking, especially at the Moodle Socials Night, held in one of the galleries where Moodlers enjoyed music, munching, dancing and socialising.

On the last day of the conference, the presentation “Use of Moodle in Medical Education” by Professor Iris Tan emerged as the grandstanding winner presentation on Research, gathering a score of 100% from all panelists and judges. Finally, Dr Melinda Bandalaria ended MootPH19 with a light but highly engaging open forum “Moodlers, Mel and Martin”. To close the conference, the President of Nephila Web Technology Ms Sheryl Villaroman extended her heartfelt gratitude to everyone who joined and supported MootPH19.
