Enjoy faster communications with improved messaging and notifications feature in Moodle 3.2

December 7, 2016

Moodle 3.2’s new messaging and notifications features aim to provide users with easier and faster communications through its new user-friendly functionality, made possible through the support of our good friends at University of Minnesota.

Here are some of the highlights of the new features:

Message and notifications icon in the navigation bar

In Moodle 3.2, all users now have direct access to recent messages and notifications from all their contacts in one place, simply by clicking the message or notifications icon in the navigation bar.

A chat window

The new messaging interface features a fully functioning chat window that shows conversation in real-time. Within chat, users can search for contacts and filter results by course or name, allowing learners to easily find peers who are taking the same classes or find something from past conversations!

When users bring up a contact, a range of options – such as adding a new person to their list – is displayed – making these small actions a simple process.

  • emoticons
  • links
  • links to images which are automatically shown inline and scaled to fit
  • links to videos which are automatically shown inline and scaled to fit
  • mathematics notations
  • and many more!

There is also an option to block people from messaging you if you want to.

Lastly, all text in the messaging functionality is filtered and by enabling filters, you will be able to send the following in your messages:

New display

In Moodle 3.2, notifications and messages are displayed side-by-side and can be easily accessed from the top of your screen on every page. When there are new messages and notifications a red number count will appear next to the icon, alerting users when they need to check their messages or notifications.

When users type a long text or insert an image, the text-entering window will also expand to suit and resize to fit respectively.

Choose how you want your notifications sent

From the preferences page, users can now configure how Moodle sends them notifications on a range of items such as assignments, feedback, forums, lessons and enrolment reminders. Simple on/off buttons can be selected, enabling users to choose whether they are notified via email or through direct mobile notifications.
