When we started brainstorming the theme for MoodleMoot Global this year, a lot of related ideas emerged around adaptability, growth, and impact in a world that’s always evolving. There was an underlying thread connecting to the moment we’re living in, where change is constant, the future feels uncertain, and education has never mattered more.
This year’s theme, “Learning to Shape Tomorrow,” carries the energy of all those sentiments. But most importantly, it communicates that learning isn’t just something we do to keep up – it’s the most powerful tool we have in building a better tomorrow.
Learning is how we shape everything that comes next
We often talk about shaping the future as if it’s just a task for world leaders, policy makers, or large corporations. But it also happens every day in classrooms, in training sessions, and in conversations, one learner at a time.
Positive change happens when there’s a willingness to show up with curiosity – to ask questions, explore ideas, challenge assumptions, and grow. Learning is how people, communities, and systems change.
The act of learning is itself an act of optimism. It says that you believe things can be different, and that you believe you can be part of that change.
The double meaning behind the theme
I love the duality in the phrase “Learning to Shape Tomorrow.” It speaks to what we’re doing – using education to build better futures. But it also speaks to where we are on the journey. We’re all still figuring out how.
Educators are reimagining what teaching looks like in a hybrid world. Learners are navigating more complexity than ever. And technology leaders are trying to create tools that are not only powerful, but accessible, equitable, and flexible. We’re not just shaping tomorrow – we’re still learning how to do it well. That’s part of what makes this work meaningful.
Why this matters even more now
Learning thrives when people are encouraged to explore openly, collaborate across cultures, and bring their full selves into the process.
Around the world, there are shifts happening. There have been changes in how knowledge is shared, whose stories are told, and what resources are made available. In times like these, it’s more important than ever to protect access to learning – to champion openness, dialogue, and the free exchange of ideas. When we do that, we don’t just educate individuals – we empower communities to shape their own futures.
For these reasons, MoodleMoot Global is more than a conference. It’s a global community of people who care deeply about learning, and who believe in its power to shape something better for all of us.
Looking ahead
I hope “Learning to Shape Tomorrow” reminds all of us – educators, technologists, decision makers, learners – that the future isn’t something that just happens. It’s something we shape together every day, with every decision we make about how we teach, what we share, and who gets to participate.
I can’t wait to see how this theme shows up in the conversations, workshops, and connections at MoodleMoot Global. I hope you can join us in Edinburgh, and I hope you come ready to share, to challenge, and to be inspired.
