LALIGA, the globally renowned Spanish football league, is a household name in sports entertainment. With a team of over 500 employees, LALIGA needed a solution to centralise and scale its learning initiatives. Initially focused on compliance and regulatory training, the Talent and Culture team recognised the importance of a more expansive corporate academy. The goal was to empower employees with a centralised learning hub encompassing diverse training needs, from compliance and professional skills to employee wellness. To bring this vision to life, LALIGA partnered with Moodle Premium Partner IThinkUPC and implemented Moodle Workplace 4.1, building a fully integrated, scalable corporate academy on a SaaS platform supported by Amazon Web Services (AWS).
The challenge: Meeting diverse training needs with an integrated system
The core challenge for LALIGA was finding a platform capable of hosting its entire educational ecosystem while integrating seamlessly with existing HR and compliance systems. Paula Guerrero, LALIGA’s Head of Talent and Culture, highlighted the growing need for a centralised tool to manage and track mandatory compliance training. Previously, LALIGA had no single platform to combine compliance, skills development, and corporate wellness programs, creating fragmented learning pathways and a lack of cohesion in professional development efforts. The key objective was to build an ecosystem where all these areas of learning could be accessed in one place.
Additionally, LALIGA’s requirement for integration with SAP SuccessFactors meant that the solution would need to facilitate efficient information exchange between platforms, providing seamless user management and reporting features essential to HR and compliance workflows.
The solution: Implementing a scalable, blended learning platform
To tackle these challenges, LALIGA chose IThinkUPC, a Moodle Premium Partner with extensive experience developing SaaS-based Moodle solutions. IThinkUPC implemented Moodle Workplace 4.1, hosted on AWS, creating a platform tailored to LALIGA’s needs with scalability and security as core priorities.
Moodle Workplace provided features beyond a traditional enterprise learning management system (LMS). For example, the multi-tenancy capability allowed LALIGA to create different, personalised training spaces for each department, while dynamic rules enabled the automation of administrative tasks, including tracking training completion. IThinkUPC connected Moodle Workplace with LALIGA’s SuccessFactors system, an HCM (Human Capital Management) platform. This setup included a custom link that updates user information every night. As a result, new employees and changes are automatically added to Moodle Workplace and assigned to the right training programs using Moodle’s Dynamic Rules.
LALIGA’s corporate academy became a fully-fledged learning learning hub that placed employees at the centre of their own professional growth. The academy’s intuitive interface was designed to reflect LALIGA’s brand, providing an environment where employees could engage with courses on everything from compliance and safety to soft skills, digital competencies, and wellness.
The result: A high-impact learning ecosystem boosting employee engagement
Implementing Moodle Workplace 4.1 in partnership with IThinkUPC has transformed LALIGA’s corporate training landscape. The new platform streamlined user management, ensuring every employee is seamlessly onboarded into the corporate academy with relevant training from their first day in the organisation. It has further improved the efficiency of compliance tracking, allowing HR and Talent departments to focus on developing high-impact learning experiences.
Some of the key metrics showcasing the platform’s success included:
- User engagement: LALIGA has seen over 443 employees actively participating in courses, indicating strong engagement with the platform.
- Hours of training: Employees have completed over 21,897 hours of training, demonstrating the platform’s capacity to meet high training demands.
- Course catalogue growth: With 52 courses now available in IT, finance, marketing, people management, and wellness, LALIGA’s catalogue continues to expand, offering tailored resources to support employees at every stage of their careers.
- Employee development plans: The corporate academy now supports a structured six-stage development plan, which includes tailored training for each employee based on their position within the organisation. This plan is complemented by a €700 training credit per employee, which can be used to pursue additional professional development options through the academy.
As the platform matures, LALIGA plans to introduce AI-driven training and expand access to clients and partners, further solidifying the academy as a competitive advantage.
Conclusion
LALIGA’s partnership with IThinkUPC and the deployment of Moodle Workplace 4.1 has set a new standard for corporate learning in the sports industry. With its scalable infrastructure and innovative integration capabilities, this project exemplifies how sports organisations can leverage LMS to enhance team cohesion, compliance, and professional growth.
