MoodleMoot Global 2022 got off to a great start with a first day packed with talks, workshops and networking opportunities.

Welcome and keynote speech

After registration and a welcome coffee, MoodleMoot Global officially kicked off with a warm welcome from Paul Hodgson. It was great for over 775 Moodlers, from educators to administrators and developers, to all gather for the first face-to-face global Moot since 2019.

CEO and founder of Moodle, Martin Dougiamas, then delivered his keynote speech, discussing “Where we can take Moodle next”. Martin’s speech emphasised that as we progress further into industry 4.0, AI and VR, it is more important than ever to collaborate to progress open infrastructure and learning. In particular, to counteract profit-focussed organisation seeking to maximise financial returns rather than benefit society.

Morning coffee break, poster presentation, and first sessions

The morning and afternoon coffee breaks provided a great opportunity to network with fellow Moodlers. Posters were also presented by Lauren Goodman and Silke Gausche at the top of the main staircase on floor E, covering Significant Learning Experiences in Moodle and Team time — Facilitating learners to work in heterogeneous groups.

Four sessions then took place for Moodlers to choose from. In the main three rooms talks were given on Assessment, Supporting an international and diverse community, and Moodle site management and integrations. In the workshop room, talks and workshops were given on Accessibility and UX.

Lunch break and early afternoon sessions

The lunch break was a perfect opportunity to visit our sponsor’s stands to find out more about their products and services. There are 22 sponsors in attendance at this year’s Moot, including platinum sponsors and Catalyst IT and 3ipunt Solutions, and Gold sponsors ReadSpeaker and Wooclap

During the early afternoon, we broke into four sessions again. There were talks on Supporting an international and diverse community, Using Moodle in unique and unexpected ways and Integrations/Healthcare. In the workshop room, there were more talks and workshops about Accessibility and UX.

Afternoon coffee break and final sessions

The afternoon coffee break provided another opportunity to ask questions about the poster presentations. We then broke into the day’s final sessions, which included talks on Assessment rubrics, Learner centred education: empowering learners and teachers, and Testing. A Learning Analytics Workshop took place in the workshop room.

Networking opportunities and silly socks competition

To finish the first day of MoodleMoot Global, attendees had the opportunity to network with fellow Moodlers and sponsors, with gluten-free beer provided. At the same time, the Moodle Users Association (MUA) took place, a chance for anyone interested in getting involved in the MUA to find out more.
