While Moodle 4.5 is a major milestone for AI support in Moodle, you don’t have to upgrade to this latest version—or leverage its native AI capabilities—to benefit from the power of AI. Whether through Moodle plugins, third-party solutions, or both, you can get started immediately with AI tools that help meet specific challenges.

To help your learners, the OpenAI Chat Block can be added in a variety of locations in Moodle. Want to expand the reach of your help desk? Add the block to the dashboard to provide 24/7 support, using OpenAI’s non-generative AI option to share current information about your Moodle site, calendar of events, and policies. Or, provide immediate tutoring to learners by adding a chat block to a course.

For educators, there are several options.

  • OpenAI Question Generator is a block that can be added to any Moodle course. Enter content in a text field, request a specific number of questions, and indicate specific question types such as true/false, short answer, and multiple choice. You can review the questions, edit them, and if desired, add them to a Moodle question bank.
  • With Nolej, you can load a variety of content—such as videos and pdfs—to create interactive learning activities, with many opportunities to shape the content by setting learning goals, themes, and difficulty levels. The activities can be exported as SCORM, H5P, and other formats. Nolej is also a Moodle Certified Integration partner, and their Nolej plugin lets you leverage Nolej to create H5P activities directly in a Moodle course.
  • Vyond is a powerful generative AI video maker that lets you create sophisticated videos quickly and easily from a prompt; it also boasts templates, drag-and-drop editing, and AI avatars. Using iorad, you can perform a task once to instantly generate a step-by-step, interactive tutorial. While these two solutions are not integrated with Moodle, we have partnered with them both to bring their content-creation potential to our clients.
  • Another new Moodle plugin, LionAI Reports, brings the power of AI to report creation. With this plugin, you can generate SQL queries from natural-language requests. So even without SQL skills, you can tap the power of SQL reporting tools—including a popular Moodle plugin that LionAI integrates with, Configurable Reports.
