Drum roll, please — we have an announcement to make… After 23 years of learning, building, and growing together, we now support more than 500 million users on registered Moodle sites worldwide!
That’s half a billion people from every corner of the globe with one philosophy in common: learning should be open, flexible, and available to everyone. Of course, that number reflects only the sites that have chosen to register with us, meaning there are many more Moodle users than we can officially count.
We believe this is a milestone worth celebrating — and it’s one we wouldn’t have been able to achieve without the support of our amazing global community.
Where we came from
Back in 2002, Moodle was a small, community-driven open‑source project with a profound mission: to build a learning platform that any organisation could afford and customise. Over the years that vision expanded, and by 2008, Moodle was a major player in online learning.
Along the way, the Moodle community grew into a huge global network of educators, institutions, and learners — a place where ideas crossed borders — and Moodle LMS became a flexible platform that could adapt to many different learning contexts.
What this milestone means
Half a billion is a big number, but for us, it means much more. User adoption on this scale is a sign of trust, and a validation of our open‑source values of freedom, flexibility and continuous innovation. It shows that people everywhere — with all kinds of needs, from simple to complex — count on Moodle products to teach, learn, and grow.
In the end, people are the soul of Moodle. We’re shaped by you.
Where we’re going next
We’re delighted that so many learners, educators and organisations choose Moodle solutions to help them build skills and create new opportunities. We take that faith, and the responsibility that comes with it, to heart.
With that in mind, over the coming years, we’re doubling down on making all our Moodle products — including Moodle Workplace, Moodle LMS and MoodleCloud — more inclusive, more flexible, more accessible, and even more powerful.
