At Moodle, we’ve always believed that great learning design starts with people. Technology should enhance learning and make it more engaging, memorable and effective. This is the idea behind our approach to AI. We build technology tools to serve human goals, not replace them.
Across the Moodle community, we’re seeing educators and organisations explore AI in ways that fit their own context, whether that is saving time, sparking ideas, or making everyday teaching and learning a little smoother. But we also know that not everyone wants, or can rely on, AI tools. And we’re building for them, too.
That’s why we’ve built AI in Moodle LMS around a clear set of principles — grounded in choice, privacy, and people-first learning — giving you the freedom to use AI when and how it supports your goals (including not using AI, if that’s what works best for your learners).
AI, Your way
Moodle’s approach to AI is built on flexibility and choice. Our AI Subsystem isn’t a single model or vendor — it’s a framework designed to fit your goals, policies, and level of readiness.
Want to use OpenAI or Azure AI? You can. Want to connect an open model like Ollama or run your own in a private data centre? You can do that, too. Not ready to introduce AI at all? That’s okay — your Moodle platform will work just as well without it.
This flexibility is both technical and philosophical. AI in Moodle LMS is built to give you agency — the freedom to explore innovation without giving up ownership, transparency, or trust.
Designed for human-centred learning
Moodle’s built-in AI tools support learning where they matter most:
- Helping learners explain complex concepts or text.
- Summarising content for quick review.
- Generating text or images directly within the editor.
These tools are designed to save time without taking over the learning experience. Educators stay in control, deciding if, where, when and how to use AI — and learners can always see when it’s active.
But the built-in features are only the beginning. Because Moodle LMS is open source and endlessly adaptable, new plugins and integrations are emerging all the time — created by developers, partners, and educators around the world. Some are experimenting with AI-driven question generators and chat bots; others are exploring smart reporting, translation, and automation tools that simplify site management.
Guided by our principles
Our AI Principles keep people, ethics, and learning at the centre of every design decision. They’re the reason AI in Moodle platforms is transparent, configurable, and trustworthy. We believe that AI must be:
- Human-centred and equitable — AI should enhance learning for everyone, no matter where they are.
- Transparent and configurable — Educators and administrators should always know when AI is being used and choose for themselves if it belongs.
- Ethical and responsible — Data privacy, integrity, and fairness are non-negotiable.
These principles guide every step we take with AI. They ensure that innovation in Moodle solutions always starts from the same place — with people, purpose, and possibility. Our goals remain clear: unlocking creativity, facilitating collaboration, and optimising outcomes for everyone who teaches and learns with Moodle platforms.
Why it matters
AI will continue to evolve, but our mission stays the same: to make quality education accessible to all. The open, flexible foundation of your Moodle platform means you can explore AI in a way that fits your values, your learners, and your world — no matter your bandwidth, budget, or belief about where AI belongs.
Because at the end of the day, great learning starts with people and grows from the connections we build. 🧡
