Manila gets ready for MoodleMoot Philippines 2019

April 2, 2019 By Júlia Verdaguer

The first MoodleMoot in Philippines took place last year in Manila and it successfully brought together the Moodle community in the country for the first time, providing a space to share experiences, knowledge and developments around the Moodle LMS. This year’s MoodleMoot Philippines is taking place on 8-10 May 2019 at the University of the Philippines Diliman Asian Center in Manila.

Today we talk to Sheryl Villaroman, President and CEO of Nephila Web Technology, Certified Moodle Partner in the Philippines and main organiser of MoodleMoot Philippines, about the goals and plans for the upcoming 2019 event.

Moodle HQ: Hello Sheryl, thank you for talking to us today. MoodleMoot Philippines 2018 was a big success. How was the experience of organising the first MoodleMoot ever in the country?

Sheryl: It was a great experience and an honor to be the first to bring MoodleMoot in the Philippines. It was overwhelming for we were able to gather and meet Moodle users from different schools and companies all over the Philippines. The collaboration among speakers, sponsors and participants is amazing.

Moodle HQ: What can you tell us about the upcoming 2019 MoodleMoot? What are the main topics and events planned for the Conference?

Sheryl: There are new and exciting activities to expect in MoodleMoot Philippines 2019. It is now a 3-day conference. We will conduct workshops on Day 1 where participants will be able to experience the actual use of Moodle, learn best practices and new skills from the Moodle experts and share experiences with other Moodlers.  Day 2 is the conference proper. There will be talks in the plenary and the highlight of the day will be a keynote speech from the Moodle founder himself Dr. Martin Dougiamas all the way from the Moodle HQ in Perth, Australia. In addition, the breakout sessions  are also exciting. We have prepared various session categories for all the participants. We have the Moodle Research Fest, People and Organization, Module Development, Pedagogies and Instructional Design, Technical Sessions and the Plugins and Integrations to be shared by prominent speakers and Moodle experts in the Philippines and abroad. There will be social night on the same day, where participants will be able to bond with Martin as well as with others. Day 3 will also be filled with plenary talks and breakout sessions that will inspire Moodlers to continue  learning Moodle, and those who are new to the LMS, to manifest skills and knowledge on the most widely used open source learning management system – Moodle. MootPh19 is sponsored by prominent and reputable companies who are known in the EdTech world!

Moodle HQ: Why do you think it is important to have an event focused open education technologies and the Moodle LMS in the Philippines?

Sheryl: As an Open Source Technology (OST) advocate, it is important to conduct such an event to raise awareness on open education technologies especially Moodle. Organizing such event will enable us to show that schools and companies do not have to spend millions just to provide convenience to the students or employees when it comes to knowing and assessing their learning, training and development programs.  It will help them appreciate the benefits of open education technologies. Aside from being cost efficient, Moodle is a long term solution that will address schools and company’s sustainable development goals. It is a solution that answers all the technical requirements of the organizations when it comes to providing LMS infrastructure as it is dynamically customizable and adaptable in different environments, whether via on-premise or via cloud infrastructure setup.

Moodle HQ: And finally, how can people get involved with MoodleMoot Philippines and be up to date with the latest news?

Sheryl: People who are interested to join the 2nd MoodleMoot in the Philippines may register at https://mootregistration.nephilaweb.com.ph/ They may follow our fb page (facebook.com/MootPH) and our website https://moodlemoot.org/mootph19/  to get more updates about MootPH19, including the official program and list of speakers.
