Moodle – the world’s open source learning platform announces the integration of H5P

Moodle General h5p

Moodle and Joubel, the creators of H5P, are working together on a major initiative to incorporate H5P into the Moodle LMS.

H5P is an open-source framework used by instructional designers and educators to create interactive content that enhances the learning experience, such as quizzes, games, videos, drag and drop activities, and more.

The release of Moodle 3.8 will allow users to easily upload H5P content into courses and natively play it back. Moodle will continue to extend the H5P integration over the next few releases to, in the end, enable users to create, share and reuse H5P interactive content without the need to install any extensions.

“Moodle is the most popular learning platform in the world and this new integration will bring hundreds of millions of new users to H5P. H5P is already the most popular content extension among Moodle users and the tighter integration and official support will propel both projects towards their goals.” said Sander Bangma, Product Manager for Moodle LMS.

Svein-Tore Griff, Founder of H5P, says: “Being integrated in Moodle Core is a major step towards the H5P community’s goal of empowering everyone to create, share and reuse interactive content. Our relentless focus on making it easy and intuitive to create appealing content will now benefit the millions of instructors using Moodle and hundreds of millions of learners around the world. We appreciate that Moodle now officially has joined the H5P movement, and look forward to the coming months and years helping each other reach our very similar goals.

Moodle’s CEO, Martin Dougiamas, says: “Our users were asking for this, so we’ve made it a priority. With H5P standardised in Moodle’s LMS products, our teachers (and students) have the ability to use and share some interesting content without needing special tools. I am especially pleased to be working with H5P as they, like Moodle, are Open Education Technology: education-focused technology developed as pure open source with open support and a self-sustainable business model (see  I look forward to taking the stage with them at our premiere Global MoodleMoot in Barcelona, November 18-20.”

The co-development shares the vision of empowering teachers. Moodle teachers will be able to create better interactive content faster. H5P promises to leap-frog the quality and quantity of interactive content by making it easier for teachers to build upon each other’s efforts instead of starting from scratch every time.

About H5P

H5P makes it easy for everyone to create and share interactive content with a great user experience for both the content creators and the content consumers. Typical interactive content that can be created with H5P includes interactive videos, interactive presentations, virtual tours and serious games. An exponentially growing number of websites in the world use H5P to provide their users with great content. H5P may be plugged in to existing publishing systems like Moodle, WordPress, Drupal, TikiWiki and other LMS and empower the users of these systems to create better content faster and share the content they create with each other in an editable format

We’ve tried contacting Moodle HQ, but we haven’t received any reply yet.

      Hi Licia!
H5P is now available offline in the latest version of our Moodle App (Moodle App 3.8.0).
App users need to either download the course where the H5P content is, or view it online first, to make it accessible offline.
We hope this solves your question, but let us know if you need further information!

    Hi Julia,

I updated my mobile app to 3.8, but it’s still not working.

It shows this message: “Your organisation installed a plugin that is not yet supported. Contact the site administrator and tell them you want to use this activity with the Moodle Mobile app.”

Is there anything we can do to make it work?

    *Our Moodle version is 3.3.8+
*We’ve added the H5P content by adding a new activity or resources / interactive content

    Are we doing anything wrong?
Would you be able to let us know asap? We are running out of time.

    Hi Licia,

Moodle 3.8 supports H5P content when is embedded in any content area using the Atto editor. The plugin you installed is a third party plugin not natively supported by the app.

Documentation about how to use the native H5P functionality in Moodle 3.8 is here

Being able to embed it in the text is really useful, but when doing as Licia (using the activity function) also allows us to do completion tracking and effectively use H5P as a part of a completable learning flow.
Is any work happening towards making the H5P activity downloadable like other core moodle activities in the app? That would have a great impact on the possibilities organisations like mine have to include exercises for learners with unstable internet connections!

      Hi Christoffer,

The team are working on supporting the H5P activity plugin for Moodle 3.9 (May 2020). Once that is done, it will also be supported on the Moodle 3.9 App which will be released a few weeks later.

      Best regards,
