Last week, our Open Source Development Coordinator, Sander Bangma, posted in our developer community forum on moodle.org with an update on Moodle 3.5 roadmap activities.

We want to also take the time to summarise all the exciting work happening behind the scenes with Moodle 3.5, scheduled to go out the second Monday in May this year (not long to go at all!).
So here we go!
GDPR
The new EU data protection regulation comes into effect on 25 May 2018 and effectively all organisations in the EU, as well as those outside the EU that store data of EU citizens, will have to comply.
Recently, we shared our GDPR approach and plan.
This work remains our top priority at the moment, while we also work with our community to implement other improvements and fix bugs for Moodle 3.5.
We are implementing changes that will assist Moodle-using organisations to become EU compliant. These changes focus on functionality to:
- Provide additional privacy information during user sign up, as well as more extensive recording and logging of user consents. Tracker information on these changes can be found here.
- Provide additional means for users to obtain a copy or their data, invoke their right to data erasure and keeping track of all types of data within Moodle in a data registry. Tracker information can be found here.
Question bank improvements
Expanding the functionality for tagging questions in the question bank is the latest project submitted by our Moodle Users Association.
This project is about adding a more flexible layer for question management in the question bank by creating a metadata layer (labels) for questions which is manageable by instructors at the course level. These labels would be usable with a ‘random question from set’ question type.

Usability improvements
We are continuing our work on improving the Moodler user experience based on the in-depth background research, stakeholder analysis and design work conducted by our UX ream.
The focus is on introducing Bootstrap v4 stable in Moodle 3.5 to lay the groundwork for exciting improvements going forward. Some of the initial UX improvements will likely focus on the dashboard.
Messaging improvements
We are also pleased to let all Moodlers know that we are making improvements to the messaging functionality of Moodle to allow for future expansion. This involves some changes to the message database tables and message events, so if you have a messaging related plugin you may have to update your code. We’re also working on including the new LTI Advantage extensions.
Moodle Mobile App
We recently announced that Moodle Mobile 3.5 will come with a new look and feel! This will involve upgrading the app to the Ionic 3 framework, some usability improvements and introducing features for GDPR compliance.
