Opening keynote: Reflecting on 25 years with Scott Anderberg, CEO of Moodle
The conference kicked off with a keynote from Moodle’s CEO, Scott Anderberg, who reflected on Moodle’s remarkable journey over the last 25 years. Scott celebrated Moodle’s global impact, from empowering educators in small community schools to supporting large-scale educational institutions. Stories shared from around the world illustrated how Moodle has transformed education by bringing affordable, accessible learning to millions. Scott’s message set the tone for the event: the future of education is bright, and Moodle is committed to supporting it every step of the way.
Martin Dougiamas on the future of education and technology
Day 2 featured an insightful keynote from Moodle founder Martin Dougiamas, who explored the future of education in an increasingly connected and AI-driven world. Martin discussed how Moodle’s Research team is working to push the boundaries of online learning, aiming to make education both deeply personal and technologically advanced. His talk was a rallying call for the community to embrace technology without losing sight of what matters most—creating meaningful learning experiences that feel human and authentic.
Augmented intelligence with Fernando Valenzuela Migoya
On the final day, educational tech leader Fernando Valenzuela Migoya led an inspiring keynote on Augmented Intelligence. Fernando shared how AI is transforming education and work, not by replacing human capabilities but by enhancing them. He emphasised the need for critical thinking, creativity, and adaptability as we navigate this new era, challenging attendees to view AI as a powerful ally in learning. Fernando’s talk left attendees energised about the potential of AI to empower both learners and educators.
A look into Moodle’s future with Marie Achour
Marie Achour, Moodle’s Global Head of Product, offered a behind-the-scenes look at Moodle’s evolving platform. Guided by user feedback and a commitment to flexibility, Marie shared some exciting new features on Moodle’s roadmap, focused on making learning more accessible and customisable. Highlights included new tools to streamline workflows and improve third-party integration, all while staying true to Moodle’s core values of openness and adaptability. Marie’s presentation left the community eager to see how these advancements will empower their work in the coming year.
Breakthrough in inclusivity: AI-powered translation for Moodle
One of the standout sessions was presented by Isaac Manzi (GIZ) and Samuel Rutunda (Digital Umuganda), who showcased an AI-powered translation plugin that promises to make digital education more inclusive. Built on the NLLB 200 model, this tool translates course content from English to Kinyarwanda, with plans to expand to more languages. This innovative plugin, designed to support local communities, is a powerful example of how AI and open-source technology can work together to break down language barriers and make education accessible to more learners around the world.
Closing reflections and community celebration
In his closing remarks, Scott Anderberg reflected on the conference’s highlights and expressed gratitude to the vibrant Moodle community. He reminded attendees that this spirit of collaboration drives meaningful change in education and invited everyone to continue their journey together, embracing the future of learning.
MoodleMoot Global 2024 concluded with the much-anticipated Moodle Party costume competition, where Jean-Francois Le Cloarec, Nathalie Perrier Barcena, and Arnaud Jezequel from E-learning Touch won for their creativity and flair.
