The new Moodle 3.8 is here!

November 19, 2019 By Júlia Verdaguer

The latest version of our open-source Moodle LMS brings forum enhancements, further learning analytics functionalities and a first-stage H5P integration.

Our Moodle open source project is supported by our global community, and their contribution plays a big part in our release. Our latest Moodle 3.8 focuses on community requested improvements including the first part of the much called for H5P integration, along with forum improvements voted for and funded by the Moodle Users Association.

Take a look at Moodle 3.8 in action:

Get insight into your learners’ activity in the Forum

The revamped Forum activity enables teachers to easily assess student contributions directly from their posts, with different types of grading supported, including rubrics, the ability to view discussions in context and to collapse the grading panel to free up more space. Forum discussions may also be usefully exported.

With the new Forum summary report, teachers can quickly see valuable data relating to forum activity for every student: how many discussions they have started, how many replies they have sent, their most recent posts, a word and character count if enabled, along with other useful data.

Boost student engagement with interactive content

As Part 1 of the integration of Moodle and H5P, Moodle 3.8 enables teachers to easily embed interactive multimedia content from the open-source H5P project into areas such as Pages, Books and Labels. With the new H5P button in the Atto editor teachers can link to or upload a variety of quizzes, presentations, video exercises and more.

Increase course engagement with Learning Analytics insights

As we explained in our sneak-peek post, Moodle 3.8 includes two new analytics insights that allow teachers to easily monitor and contact students who have not accessed the course recently or at all.

Use emojis for better communication

With emoji support in Moodle 3.8, everyone can include these colourful, universal communication accessories in private messaging, as well as in the Atto text editor within Moodle courses.

Search and filter like a pro!

You can now search your courses more easily on the dashboard, filtering them by course type or course custom field.

For Admins, automated course backups are now processed in a logical order with the option to exclude course files.

Big shout out to Koen Roggemans and our global community of translators

Moodle 3.8 is dedicated to Koen Roggemans, our volunteer Moodle translation coordinator. Koen has diligently handled all Moodle translation matters for over 15 years, as well as maintaining the Dutch language pack. You can find out more about Koen’s role in this interview.

We recognise and appreciate the work of all language pack maintainers and translators, whose indispensable contributions make possible the spread of our open-source LMS across the world, empowering educators and learners in over 100 languages
