MoodleMoot Brazil in Sao Paulo set for 27 – 28 April 2017

April 26, 2017

Did you know that there are more than 4,494 Moodle sites in Brasil?

The Moodle community in Brasil is large, enthusiastic, and very supportive of the open source project.

This is even more evident through the fact that 2017 will be the 11th year that the community has organised a MoodleMoot in Brasil.

Since 2014, the community has held two MoodleMoots – the first one has been annually held at the Mackenzie Presbyterian University in Sao Paulo and the second one, later in the year, in another region of Brazil.

In 2017, the first MoodleMoot Brasil will be held again in São Paulo, at the same university mentioned above. The event will be held from 27 – 28 April from 9am to 5pm.

We talked to one of the organising committee members – Gilvan Marques – about what’s in store for MoodleMoot Brasil 2017, São Paulo.

Moodle HQ: Thanks Gilvan for taking the time to chat to us. MoodleMoot Brasil is now in its 11th year of operation.

Would you be able to please give us a bit of background on how the Moodle community in Brasil started and how the first Moots were organised in the country?

Gilvan Marques: Until 2014 there were 8 MoodleMoots, all of them in the city of São Paulo. The first four MoodleMoots were organised by the University and Fundação Bradesco and the last 4 conferences by DirectWeb.

In 2014, MoodleMoot Brazil organisers – Daniel Neis, Gisele Brugger, Lino Badiu and myself – started discussing the possibility of doing a MoodleMoot Brazil outside São Paulo and conducting it in other locations in Brazil.

Daniel Neis, a Moodle developer, promptly offered space at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) and organised the first MoodleMoot Floripa, in the south of the country. The highlight of this MoodleMoot was that the event was truly community based and complementary!

In 2015 the organising team held more MoodleMoots in São Paulo and Brasilia (capital of Brazil) and following that another one in São Paulo and Juiz de Fora, a city in the interior of Minas Gerais.
MoodleMoot Brasil 2016 was also an important highlight in our history – it was the first time Moodle Founder and CEO, Martin Dougiamas, attended our Moot and presented.

MoodleMoot Brazil

We did notice after awhile that a percentage of people who registered did not show up or participate at the event, possibly due to the complementary nature of the event.

So in 2017 the organising committee decided to charge a symbolic fee to guarantee the presence of the participants. This has been widely accepted as all spaces for MoodleMoot Brazil 2017 in Sao Paulo is all filled out! We even have a waiting list of people who would like to attend! We are excited to see the enthusiasm and support for this MoodleMoot.

I would also like to invite other organisers – Gisele Brugger and Daniel Neis – to answer the following questions.

Moodle HQ: What are some of the main objectives that you would like participants from MoodleMoot Brazil to gain, either by attending or presenting at the conference?

Gilvan Marques: Brazil is a very big country and what we see as one of the main positive gains by participating in our MoodleMoots is the exchange of information about the use of Moodle, a network of contacts, and new business opportunities/possibilities.

Moodle HQ: MoodleMoot Brasil 2017 is happening again on 27 – 28 April in Sao Paulo. Can you let us know what activities, presentations or other exciting things that participants can look forward to?

Daniel Neis: By going to MoodleMoot Brasil one can expect to be exposed to everything about Moodle.

Our Brasil Moodle community already have the traditional/long-standing communication via hangout with Simey Lameze from Moodle HQ. At these hangouts, Simey would share with us what is coming in the next versions of Moodle.

This year we will have Gavin Henrick, Business Development Manager from Moodle HQ, in person for our MoodleMoot Brasil keynote and roundtable discussions. ,

There will also be workshops for beginners using Moodle Cloud. We will look at case studies presentations for small and big companies with sessions on development, themes, learning analytics, blended learning, pretty much everything!

We have more than 30 speakers and 300 participants ready to share their experiences with Moodle.

Moodle HQ: How can people who are still interested in MoodleMoot Brasil register their spot?

And will there be another MoodleMoot Brazil in the latter part of the year?

Gilvan Marques: As mentioned above, all spaces for MoodleMoot Brasil in Sao Paulo starting tomorrow is all filled.

For future events, participants can register through our official Moodle Brazil website (https://www.moodlebrasil.org) which contains our MoodleMoot history since 2014 and where we have 4,272 registered users.

To stay in touch with upcoming events and other activities within the Moodle Brasil community, we encourage people to follow our social networks:

Also, from this year, we have started using the official MoodleMoot website – moodlemoot.org/mootbr

Gisele Brugger: We will also have the second edition of MoodleMoot Brasil in the city of Salvador – Bahia, on October 19, 20 and 21, 2017.

It will be the first time the event will be held in the Northeast region of Brazil. The choice of location has been made through polling.

As Gilvan mentioned, please follow us on social networks mentioned above to get the latest events updates and news.

Thank you Gilvan, Gisele and Daniel for taking the time to talk to us in preparation for MoodleMoot Brazil 2017 from 27 – 28 April. Good luck with the event coming up!
