During his keynote at MoodleMoot Australia 2017, Moodle Founder and CEO, Martin Dougiamas, announced our new investment partnership with Education For The Many (EFTM).
EFTM is a subsidiary of the French-based Leclercq family office involved in well-known global companies such as Decathlon.
The new $6m investment will be used towards advancing Moodle’s mission of “empowering educators to improve our world” through progressing a number of key projects and initiatives, such as MoodleNet, new Learn Moodle curriculum and of course, improving usability in Moodle core.
How time files! This year we celebrated Moodle’s 15th birthday with a global Moodle Party.
We also took the opportunity to reflect on how our open source learning platform has advanced and evolved over the last 15 years.
From that first original post where Martin Dougiamas worked on Moodle by himself, we now have over 40 staff at Moodle HQ, located around the world and of course, a global, supportive community of over 120 million registered users.
We look forward to celebrating many more birthdays with all Moodlers.
This year Moodlers from all over the globe joined to share ideas, learn best practices and meet their peers.
MoodleMoots took place in: Australia, the UK, the United States, Russia, Japan, Germany, France, Guatemala, Colombia, Paraguay, Brazil , Dubai, Greece, Italy and for the first time Moodle HQ hosted MoodleMoot India in Mumbai.

Since our first release in 2001, Moodle has been dedicated to empowering educators, of all kinds, in their work.
This year we took the time to reaffirm our mission of: “empowering educators to improve our world”.
Last month Moodle Mobile Team Leader, Juan Leyva, announced that a new modern look Moodle Mobile 3.5 will be available around May 2018.
The app will come with several UX updates, in line with our aim to improve the usability of Moodle for learners and educators alike.
One key project we announced this year is the MoodleNet Project, described as Moodle’s “new open social media platform for educators, focussed on professional development and open content.”
Under the guidance of long time Moodler, Doug Belshaw, the project is underway, with a white paper currently in progress (and you can all contribute to the development of).
The term “Learn Moodle” now covers a whole new curriculum to learn how to teach online, of which our Basics MOOC forms the first stage. Our Moodle Education team has begun constructing training modules designed to follow the MOOC and to lead to new Moodle Teaching Certificates and a larger conversation around Teaching and Learning using Moodle.
In the meantime, you wouldn’t want to miss our first Learn Moodle 3.4 Basics MOOC, starting on 8 January!
As you know, MoodleCloud is our cloud-hosted solution for your learning environment. The multiple packages and plans come with additional plugins and tools for engaging, fun and interactive learning.
This year we saw MoodleCloud continue to rise above the mark with the addition of the Starter Plan, increased BigBlueButton users and two major updates – Moodle 3.3 and Moodle 3.4!
