We think Moodle, all day, every day.

Who we are

Moodle Pty Ltd, based in Perth, Australia and affectionately dubbed Moodle HQ, is the independent company behind the Moodle project.

Millions of people now use Moodle, and Moodle HQ provides support for the community in a number of ways.

Of course we are the core developer of Moodle, responsible for maintaining the code with regular releases, performing the major tasks of software development such as testing and integrating ideas and code from the rest of the community, participate in external working groups and producing documentation and education materials for Moodle.

We also maintain and develop the community web sites, such as moodle.org and moodle.net, look after marketing and trademarks, run a Learn Moodle MOOC, and we organise and support key conferences for the Moodle community worldwide: MoodleMoots.

Finally, and very importantly, we also manage the certified Moodle Partners program, which provides a network of service companies around the globe to give help to those who need it, while at the same time providing revenue to pay for our core activities.

Our History

The first public version of Moodle software was released in 2001 by Martin Dougiamas, working alone.  A year or two later he started our company Moodle Pty Ltd to help support the community and expand our learning platform, and he continues as our CEO.

In 2004 we launched the Moodle Partner program as a unique business model to help fund the project, and this has now expanded to over 80 partners covering most parts of the world.

Our numbers have grown steadily since then as Moodle has become a mainstream product.  Although we are not a huge company, around 35 people (about two-thirds in our Perth office), we work all the time coordinating over 200 active developers in the community and trying to satisfy millions of users and 70 partner companies, so we have plenty to do!

Our Mission

The mission of our company, and indeed for the Moodle software as well, is to:

  • Support teachers with their teaching
  • Support learners with their learning
  • Ensure that Moodle is open in every way, yet Moodle sites can be fully private
  • Integrate everything needed for a course in a single platform
  • Provide the most flexible toolset possible
  • Enable Moodle to scale to any size required
  • Allow anyone to contribute to global education

Our Values

These are the values that we encourage each other to uphold, for the good of the educators we serve and each other:

Education is the foundation of making the world a better place. We, our teachers and our students all need to be always learning, and looking for ways to improve how we learn.

We treat everyone with respect and sensitivity, recognising the importance of their contributions: team members, customers, partners, suppliers and competitors.

We employ the highest ethical standards, demonstrating honesty and fairness in every action that we take.

Our goals, our tools, our processes and our results shall be open as much as is practical. Our team members are encouraged to speak openly and communicate freely both internally and externally.

We encourage a culture of experimentation and research, where entrepreneurship and prudent risk-taking are encouraged, rewarded and incorporated.

We also believe in having a good time while doing what we love, and we do love what we do at Moodle HQ!

Our core team is a passionate and talented bunch – perhaps you want to join us?
