Climate-KIC developed a scalable and flexible learning environment with Moodle Workplace

October 31, 2023 By Barnana Sarkar

Founded in 2010 in the Netherlands, Climate-KIC identifies and supports innovation that helps society mitigate and adapt to climate change. As a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Climate-KIC is driven by the motivation that a decarbonised, sustainable economy is not only necessary to prevent catastrophic climate change but presents a wealth of opportunities for business and society.

With a growing community of 58,000 users actively engaged in climate education, the organisation operates at the intersection of diverse sectors, bringing together partners from business, academia, and the public/non-profit domains. This collaborative approach forms networks of expertise through which innovative products, services and systems can be developed, brought to market and scaled up for impact.

The organisation understands that to address the complex challenges posed by climate change, capacity building is essential at various levels. Recently, Climate-KIC has been in the process of expanding its LMS to facilitate internal learning and cater to professionals seeking to enhance their understanding of climate change and adopt relevant competencies.

The challenge: Lack of scalability and flexibility in the previous learning platform

Climate-KIC was using a learning platform for both internal training and external courses. With a diverse user base, the platform’s focus was to disseminate climate education. However, as the contract came to an end, Climate-KIC reevaluated their training needs.

The decision to explore a new learning and training solution stemmed from a desire for increased flexibility and scalability in course development, data ownership and a shift away from a model with payment per user. Meeting the demands of an expanding user base and diverse courses required a more adaptable solution.

The solution: Adapting Moodle Workplace to enhance capacity for impactful learning

Climate-KIC collaborated with Moodle Premium Certified Partner, 3ipunt, to integrate Moodle Workplace as their preferred learning solution. The organisation’s evaluation criteria focused on cost-effectiveness, ease of use, and seamless integration with other platforms, as well as the capability to offer paid courses. Moodle Workplace met these criteria, providing a comprehensive solution aligned with Climate-KIC’s needs. The decision-making process involved learning designers, program managers, and partner experts, which ensured a holistic perspective.

One feature that specifically stood out for Climate-KIC while using Moodle Workplace was the tenant structure. It allows for the creation of isolated entities, referred to as tenants, within the learning environment.

Each tenant operates as an independent space with its distinct look and feel, organisational structure, user base, and learning entities. It helped Climate-KIC establish a personalised space for its learners with its unique branding and providing a distinct experience for learners.

By teaming up with 3ipunt for technical support, the collaboration facilitated a streamlined implementation of Moodle Workplace, ensuring a smooth experience for Climate-KIC throughout the integration process.

An ongoing process to enhance climate education

Since the integration of Moodle Workplace into its learning system, Climate-KIC has not only enhanced its climate education but also experienced improvements in overall productivity. The introduction of personalised dashboards and the flexibility to develop and make adjustments over the platform has allowed Climate-KIC to tailor its educational offerings to the specific needs of its learners.

While specific metrics are still in the process of being measured, the organisation is actively developing the platform and gearing towards evaluating its tangible outcomes. This commitment to ongoing platform refinement and the focus on measuring key performance indicators demonstrate Climate-KIC’s dedication to continually improving the impact and productivity of its educational initiatives.
