Made with Moodle: A pharmacist’s formula for digital transformation

Welcome to our series, Made with Moodle. Every month, we spotlight someone using the Moodle platform in creative, impactful ways. Have a story of your own? We’d love to hear it.

“This story proves how powerful learning attitude and resourcefulness can be.”

When Khayam Ul Haq arrived at Rehman Medical Institute in 2022, one of the first things on his to-do list was an overhaul of the organisation’s exam system — and with 12 undergraduate healthcare programmes to manage, this was no small project.

“We needed to shift from paper-based exams to a reliable, cost-efficient digital platform,” he explains. “As a pharmacist with absolutely no formal IT training, finding the right solution felt like quite a challenge.”

Settling quickly into his role as coordinator of examinations, Khayam began to evaluate test-scoring software and learning management systems. As he did so, the institute’s existing approach to scoring — a basic grading app instructors used to scan paper bubble sheets — felt increasingly limited. At the other end of the scale, optical mark recognition (OMR) technology was simply beyond the budget.

Then, Khayam found Moodle — and with it, a clever little plugin that solved his scanning conundrum. Suddenly, everything clicked into place. He started exploring and experimenting with the platform, sometimes late into the evening, shaping a one-window exam management system customised to the institute’s needs.

“Moodle surprised me on many occasions,” he says. His newfound solution went way beyond bulk bubble sheet processing, offering not only the specialised features he’d been looking for, but the key to an entirely new digital exam structure. This was genuinely exciting.

As the months passed, Moodle went from an underutilised tool at RMI to the backbone of its exam system. Khayam learned as he went along, developing his Moodle administrator skills while helping students and colleagues make the most of the platform.

“Over time, I built an entire digital exam system without placing any additional financial burden on the institute ,” he says. “Later, I began offering consultancy to other colleges, advising them on exam management and using H5P for active and scenario-based learning. It’s been really rewarding.”

Today, Khayam’s colleagues and faculty at Rehman Medical Institute use Moodle for collaborative question bank development and management, plus learning content development. As a result of his hard work, Khayam’s career has progressed. He now regularly runs workshops and training sessions, highlighting Moodle’s potential to new and existing users.

“For me, this story is about making the most of an open-source tool and proving how powerful learning attitude and resourcefulness can be,” he says. “I’m in love with Moodle — it’s changed everything for the better, and yet this is just the beginning.”
