Moodle + Edinburgh: A perfect match

Edinburgh’s city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site overseen by an ancient 12th century castle at its western edge. It’s also home to organisations invested in using the power of education, collaboration, and technology to solve global challenges in healthcare, climate change and access to learning — in human-centric ways.

Last year saw the opening of the Edinburgh Futures Institute (EFI), an interdisciplinary hub at the University of Edinburgh dedicated to an ethical, creative use of technology to advance social justice, and help communities build sustainable, inclusive futures.

Meanwhile, six innovation hubs across the city are using data for a positive impact on society. The Data-Driven Innovation (DDI) programme is set to support growth in ten key industries by encouraging collaborations between academia, businesses, charities, and the public sector.

Design, digital, and arts scenes are thriving too: Edinburgh hosts the world’s largest open-access arts festival and Edinburgh International Festival – an event dedicated to accessible arts programming.

Conversations to build on

Last year, we gathered in Mexico for MoodleMootGlobal 2024. Here are three speaker highlights, to give you a flavour of what’s in store.

EdTech that got us talking

Fred Dixon, co-founder of BigBlueButton, lifted the lid on the future of virtual classrooms — where pedagogy meets data.
In his session, Fred shared how BigBlueButton uses AI and analytics to make online learning more interactive, responsive, and effective. As an open-source virtual classroom solution, BigBlueButton helps educators spot struggling students in real time, offering instant feedback to improve outcomes on the spot.

He also demonstrated how the platform’s advanced engagement analytics give educators a clearer picture of student participation, spotlighting where more personalised and inclusive learning experiences need to happen. We learned that blending powerful tech with sound educational principles is redefining what’s possible in virtual classrooms — and inspiring new possibilities for educators.

Embracing learner-led journeys in Moodle Workplace

In his engagingly personal presentation, Emilio Lozano, our Product Director of Premium Solutions, shared how Moodle is shifting from traditional, top-down learning to experiences that put the learner firmly in control.

Central to this shift is the Learning Catalogue — a tool that empowers learners to explore, self-enrol, and shape their own learning journeys. Emilio explained this through “Ben,” a fictional employee whose curiosity fuels an ongoing cycle of discovery, reinforcing both self-directed and prescribed learning in the platform.

Emilo also gave us a look at what’s coming in Moodle Workplace and beyond: featured courses, smarter enrolment options, better multi-tenancy support, and the long-awaited addition of programme support in the catalogue. These updates are all steps toward a more scalable, personalised, and learner-centred experience.

His key message? Learning platforms should do more than deliver training — they should motivate personal growth.

Augmented intelligence: Rethinking skills for a human–AI future

Fernando Valenzuela Migoya’s keynote didn’t question whether AI will change how we work and learn — but how we prepare ourselves to thrive alongside it. We left with ideas on how to use AI to augment skills-based learning to give teachers time to support younger generations with the multitude of skills they need to build emotional intelligence and resilience to become protagonists of their futures.

He’s been busy designing panels of AI experts for eight universities and monitoring progress. His experiment aims to help support and monitor teachers and learning outcomes and develop a new world of active learners.
