The Moodle story
Moodle was born from a desire to give educators a way to create quality education experiences over the internet.
From an outback town in Western Australia
Our Founder and CEO, Martin Dougiamas, was raised in the Western Australian desert and attended school via distance education. His positive experience with distance learning sowed the seeds of a vision to use the characteristics of the Internet to:
- take education beyond physical classrooms that have barely changed in hundreds of years
- enable quality education in all corners of the globe
Martin, and Moodle, have always supported the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights that everyone has the right to education.
From humble beginnings in 1999, Moodle LMS, the open source platform at the heart of the Moodle ecosystem, has constantly evolved through a commitment to pedagogy, open source philosophy and a collaborative global community of like-minded educators and technologists.
Founder & CEO, Moodle
"One of the seventeen UN Sustainable Development Goals is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. In fact that’s the most important one, because without that, we can’t achieve any of the other sixteen goals!"
A global project
Today, hundreds of millions of people, in thousands of organisations in every education sector, in every country on the globe, in nearly every language, use Moodle as a toolbox to manage their online learning.
Over the past two decades, Moodle LMS has been selected as the stable base for many prestigious Universities in the world including the Open University UK, the Open University of Beijing with 2 million students and 100,000 teachers, and UNAM in Mexico with 150,000 students.
It is also widely used in workplace settings, by large organisations such as the NHS in the UK, throughout many UNESCO organisations, and a number of the world’s military institutions such as the U.K. Navy and the U.S. Air Force.
Extensively in schools
Moodle is also used by thousands of schools. In some countries, like Spain or Austria, Moodle is used in over 80% of schools, and supported centrally by education departments.
The Moodle ecosystem
Moodle LMS, the open source learning management system used by hundreds of millions of learners worldwide, is the heart of the world’s most customisable and trusted online learning solution.
This includes a network of Certified Service Providers, Moodle Workplace, Moodle Apps, Moodle Academy, the learning hub for the global Moodle community and soon to be launched MoodleNet, a place to share and curate open educational resources.
