Built together: A story of partnership and progress in Moodle Workplace

September 8, 2025 By Lauren Goodman

When we say Moodle is built by many hands, we mean it.

As an open source platform, Moodle LMS has always grown through collaboration — shaped by contributions from educators, developers, and organisations around the world. Moodle Workplace builds on that foundation, combining the power of Moodle LMS with features tailored for organisational training.

“Moodle Workplace is built to solve real organisational challenges,” says Emilio Lozano, Product Director, Premium Workplace Solutions at Moodle HQ. “And the best ideas come directly from the people facing them.”

That means every improvement we make is grounded in real-world needs — often brought to us by the people using Workplace every day.

This is the story of one such improvement, developed in close partnership with Synergy Learning, a Moodle Premium Certified Partner serving clients across the UK and Germany.

A common challenge, a practical solution

“Managers need to be able to enrol their teams into courses — not just longer learning paths like programs or certifications,” Synergy Learning told us.

It was feedback they’d heard directly from one of their Workplace customers. The request was clear, grounded in a real-world challenge, and echoed what we’d heard in other conversations: team managers often lack the tools to oversee learning without relying on HR or system admins.

“When we hear the same challenge echoed across different organisations, that’s a signal for us,” explains Emilio. “It means we’re not just solving for one client — we’re addressing a gap that affects many.”

Across organisations, managers are often the ones who know what their teams need — whether it’s refresher training, onboarding support, or upskilling for a new project. But without the right tools, they’re stuck waiting on someone else to enrol their staff or pull progress reports.

This creates delays, extra admin work, and missed opportunities to support learning when it matters most.

Together, we set out to change that — by giving managers more direct access to the learning tools they need to support their teams, while still respecting organisational structure, permissions, and reporting.

From request to reality

Synergy Learning brought the idea to the Moodle Workplace team with a clear goal: make it easier for managers to support learning directly, without extra admin steps.

We worked closely to shape a solution that could serve not just one organisation, but many. The result is a new update in Moodle Workplace that gives managers the ability to enrol their team members into individual courses and track their progress — all within the existing ‘My Teams’ block.

We saw this as something that could benefit more than just one client,” said the team at Synergy Learning. “By working with the Moodle Workplace team to bring it into core, we knew it would be maintained, improved, and available to the wider community — which is exactly how this ecosystem should work.

For Workplace users, this means faster access to the right training, fewer delays, and greater flexibility for supporting team development.

Managers should be able to act when they see a need. They’re the ones closest to their teams. This gives them the ability to assign relevant training, follow up on progress, and support staff development — without extra admin.

Built with (and for) the community

This feature — now part of Moodle Workplace — is one example of how our community shapes the platform every day. It started with a real need. It grew through conversation, trust, and shared goals. And it came to life through partnership.

“By working side by side with partners, we can ensure these solutions scale beyond one organisation,” Emilio reflects. “That’s how Workplace grows stronger — not in isolation, but through collaboration that raises the bar for everyone.”

We’re grateful to the team at Synergy Learning — not only for bringing forward the need, but for their openness to working together at every stage of the process.

Because Workplace isn’t just built for our community — it’s built with them.
